Short Waves Festival 2020 Program

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]It’s here! We present you with the full program of 12. Short Waves Festival!

As usual, we will be presenting the competition program and 5 categories with entries from all over the world that will be competing for awards. The non-competition section will include subject-focused films, prestigious film award nominees, and programs for audiences of all ages. Geographic Fokus will be dedicated to Lebanon, while online industry panels will provide the opportunity to discuss the medium of short film. Special events will include a sound performance Coquetta by Ioana Vreme Moser, and finally on Saturday evening we are going to announce the competition winners during the Award Ceremony featuring a musical performance by a countrywide acclaimed artist from Poznań (more info soon).
Yet the festival is first and foremost a meeting place, often in unconventional locations, as creative adaptation of space is our specialty. Our famous secret cinematic house parties are going to return in a summer edition as Random Garden Cinema. We will also be presenting a wandering Festival Club that is going to be hosted at the most vibrant and the hottests spots within the city’s clubbing and nightlife scene and outdoor venues by the Warta river, perfect for the summer.

COMPETITION PROGRAM

This year’s competition program includes 3 international competitions (International Competition, Dances with Camera, Urban View) and 2 Polish competitions (Polish Competition, Polish Experimental Film Competition) that encompass 73 films from 36 countries, carefully selected from over 1500 submissions. The program includes 34 titles created by women, 7 world premieres, 3 European premieres and 35 Polish ones!

The combined prize pool is 42 000 PLN, awarded by an international jury, as well as our audience. This year, for the first time, a Young Jury of three will select the recipient of cash award in Polish Competition. After the festival, we will be hosting a series of screenings called Short Waves on Tour that are going to be presented in multiple locations across Poland.

International Competition is a selection of 5 film sets that take a closer look at small communities and family units, characterized by uncertainty and anxiety about the future and portray attempts to escape the society and the world. Polish Competition is once again a review of the most recent Polish productions, touching upon local and global issues. The program also includes a dance film competition Dances with Camera that examines the body and movement through the camera lens, this year often focusing on female protagonists. Urban View is going to focus on urban design, but also deeply engaging, close encounters with residents of various metropolises, presenting different ways in which one may experience a city. Polish Experimental Film Competition is a new section with productions at the intersection of visual art and film, based on freedom that comes with expression and the language of film.

NON-COMPETITION PROGRAM

A wide short film selection for everyone! Outdoor entertainment section is going to be rich in genre films: terrifying Horror Shorts, hilarious Comedy Shorts and piping hot Kinky Shorts. There’s also a lot going on in the age group categories: a Senior Film Club meeting, as well as a section for our youngest viewers SWF for Kids, prepared by our friends from Ale Kino! festival. Let’s not forget about genuine festival thrills: once again we will be screening European Film Award nominees during EFA Shorts.

SPECIAL SCREENINGS – SPOTLIGHTS

Subject-focused short film screenings prepared by curators, artists and programmers from all over the world. We invite you to watch a screening of Scottish short films from Glasgow Short Film Festival and a review of films from one of the most interesting organizations endorsing video-art – sixpackfilm. We also recommend a screening of animations by Tomasz Popakul that is going to be a review of his work, including an acclaimed film „Acid Rain”. For 2 days during the festival, the attendees will have an opportunity to enter the world of choreography prepared by Das Totale Tanz Theater in a different dimension – VR 360°: Dance Film. Towards the end of the festival we will be presenting the SWF Award Ceremony featuring a musical performance (more info soon), as well as a screening of awarded productions: SWF Awarded, the following day.

FOCUS PROGRAM

This year we will be presenting two focus sections. Fixing the Future contains four programs presenting a variety of strategies designed to achieve the eponymous task: from environmental activism, through mass demonstrations, to individual decisions made by each one of us. The program also delivers visions of future worlds that are an undeniable material for reflection. The geographic focus will be centered around the cinematography of Lebanon – 3 programs prepared by the director of NDU International Film Festival from Beirut.

HOTEL EUROPA

Hotel Europa is a brand new, all-year project led by the Foundation of Cultural Education Ad Arte – a safe and comfortable space of exchange concerning the past, the present and the future of Europe. Its program will comprise of film screenings, presentations, meetings, concerts and performances with 3 special events as a part of Short Waves Festival in August.

INDUSTRY PROGRAM

Industry program is intended not only for professionals, but anyone who would like to expand their understanding of the film industry. The online program contains 4 discussion panels dedicated to pandemic reality. We are going to talk about the future of VR technology, dance film and performative arts, opportunities for collaboration between festivals, as well as the potential of short cinema in educational and community-building activities. We would also like to invite those guests who will be visiting Poznań to join us for an industry drink with Warsaw Film School and a Festival Brunch on Saturday.

WANDERING FESTIVAL CLUB

Festival Club is an evening stop after a whole day of festival events. Each day the club is going to be located at a different venue. We will be visiting the best clubs in Poznań: Tama Bar, Schron, HOUSE Szkolna, and outdoor spaces like Brzeg Wschodni or barbarka ze spokojem. In each of our festival clubs we will be entertained by the representants of the city’s famous electronic music scene.
